Peset manager with in a preset manager

Postby willzz32 on Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:59 pm

Hi All

I'm Hoping that you can help ma along with a problem i have.

I am trying to save info from a preset manager within a schematic which is controlled by another preset manager.

I have a controller i have built that uses the preset manager to change banks ,Within these banks i have another preset manager that controls the text edit box for names. If i change presets the names stay the same until i change banks and the names then change to new names for that bank. The only problem now is that i need to find away to store both preset managers info to one save file so i can load everything in one go. hope this makes sense.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi willzz,
Unfortunately, two preset managers in one schematic is not advisable.
Although it may appear to work correctly within SM, it will not work right when you export your design as a VST plugin. This is because the manager acts as the "communication channel" to the VST host - and the host will get very confused when it sees two preset managers.
What will happen will probably depend on your host - certainly preset changing/storage/loading will be corrupted, but some hosts may even crash when you load the plugin.

However, the kind of thing you want to do may still be possible. A search for "preset manager" will find several alternative designs that users have posted - some are much better than the standard manager when you need large amounts of presets.
Feel free to use any schematics and algorithms I post on the forum in your own designs - a credit is appreciated (but not a requirement).
Don't stagnate, mutate to create. Without randomness and serendipity the earth would be just another barren rock.

You can instead of using a preset manager, create a text file and parse it anytime is loaded.
So by that way, you can save everything you want and you won't have conflicts. But, as plugin, i't wont be recognized by any host.

I think however this could be done. One standard preset manager (external host compatible) plus sub-arrays that gather desired information on demand and re-trigger them on demand (key or mouse click based, external files). So it would just not use "manager" primitive for sub-presets if I understand correctly, and thus - it would work only from within the plugin.

After I finish first part of my current project - I will take look at that subject too, because I'd like to implement main preset manager and "parametric snapshots" which are in fact things like preset manager. But if meanwhile someone makes a general and simplified template that works that way, that would be great!

Wow

Thanks all for the speedy reply. Once again SM forum shows the rest how to do it.

The design i was looking at will be a standalone exe.

I have already fort the 2 presets working ,but as you say i can not save them as one .

I will try the suggestions above but will have to learn them as i go.

Thanks for the response great to know that people are here willing to help.

I don´t know how to make a preset inside another preset, (and I need it a lot!) but I suggest:
See into Step LFO module. It has its own preset, regarding main SM preset manager. I think it can be a way to research it.

It depends on complexity of your project. Some options are discussed here:

Another option is to use simple file loaders, like this one:
