Carrington event

I was sitting here thinking about how you could protect electronic equipment in a Carrington Event http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/06may_carringtonflare/ and the power go's out. I went outside to check for auroras. Lol

Probably there is no way to protect equipment. Any bright ideas?

Edit
Don't get me wrong ... I don't think the sky is falling this is just a topic I have been thinking about recently.

Here is something informative I ran across. http://www.zurichna.com/internet/zna/SiteCollectionDocuments/en/media/SolarStorms.pdf
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
