AAX is the new RTAS.
Honestly IMHO Pro Tool's grip on the lower-high-end studios has slipped, seems many producers & mastering engineers have switched to Magix's Sampletude or even Ableton Live (since 64bit audio was supported in v7+). But Pro Tools users in general have the cash to spend on more plugins, so being able to pump out plugs to a market that is used to paying $250+, I see an opportunity.
